STEP BY STEP GUIDE FOR WORKING WITH A COMPOSER

Workshop with Composer Grace-Mary Burega

WHEN: October 21, 2022, 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm

Women in Film and Video of New England board member, Grace-Mary Burega, will give a step-by-step guide to working with a composer if you are a director, producer, writer, or filmmaker. Topics include why you would need a composer for your project, the advantages of custom music over library or royalty-free music, how to pick a composer, how to communicate your vision for the music, temp scores, how to spot a film, and how to give revision notes for music. Grace-Mary will use examples and clips from her own career to demonstrate the process and will take audience questions.

Grace-Mary Burega is a composer for film, TV, and video games as well as a woodwind multi-instrumentalist on saxophone, clarinet, and flute. Her compositions have been on TV PSAs as well as in short and feature films currently on the festival circuit. Grace Notes is her media composing company, which specializes in custom music for a variety of projects such as documentaries, horror, comedy, animation, and more. Grace-Mary is a recent graduate of the Berklee Online Masters of Music in Film Scoring program. She is currently the Secretary of Women in Film and Video of New England, as well as the Secretary of the Female Composer Safety League. MEET THE FILARDI BROTHERS

A conversation with Jason Filardi and Peter Filardi

Join this lively discussion with Jason and Peter Filardi, brothers who grew in Mystic, Connecticut, and went on to have successful careers as screenwriters, showrunners and executive producers in Hollywood.

Jason Filardi made his debut in Hollywood with the box office hit Bringing Down The House, which starred Steve Martin and Queen Latifah. That film went on to become one of the highest grossing comedies of 2003 grossing over 130 million in the United States alone. Since then, Jason has become one of the industries go to screenwriters. He has done rewrites and polishes on a variety of high-profile projects including Beverly Hills Chihuahua, the ensemble comedy Wild Hogs, starring Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence, and John Travolta, The Pacifier, starring Vin Diesel, Eight Below, starring Paul Walker and The Proposal, starring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock. Filardi is also responsible for the comedy 17 Again released in 2009 by Warner Brothers/New Line Cinema that starred Zac Efron. A film that grossed over 130 million at the worldwide box office. In 2018, Jason wrote Status Update starring teen heartthrob Ross Lynch. The movie was released on numerous streaming platforms. Currently, Jason and his brother, Peter, adapted Stephen King’s short story Jerusalem’s Lot for television. The two are executive producers and showrunners of the 10-episode series Chapelwaite, starring Academy Award winner Adrien Brody and Emily Hampshire, and which aired on Epix Entertainment in August 2021.

Peter Filardi is best known as the screenwriter behind Flatliners; The Craft; Ricky 6; TNT’s Salem’s Lot; an episode for Nightmares and Dreamscapes. Most recently Filardi has worked as writer\showrunner of the Epix limited series Chapelwaite starring Adrien Brody and Emily Hampshire. Awards include: Winner Prix du Public, Fantasia Intl Film Fest, Montreal for Ricky 6. Winner Best Fight, MTV Movie Awards, for The Craft. Winner Best Actress, Julia Roberts, Peoples’ Choice Awards for Flatliners. Best TV Presentation, Saturn nominee for both Salem’s Lot and Nightmares and Dreamscapes.

CONVERSATION WITH JASON CONNELL, AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARIAN TURNED PODCASTER

Meet Jason Connell, an award-winning documentary producer/director, founder of The United Film Festival, and most recently a popular podcast producer/host, as he shares his amazing journey from award-winning documentarian to podcaster. His films included the documentaries Strictly Background, which spotlights 10 career movie extras, the indispensable background actors in films, trying to make it in Hollywood, Holy Rollers: The True Story of Card Counting Christians, which follows the rise of the largest and most well-funded blackjack team in America, made up entirely of churchgoing Christians, and GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, which chronicles the rise and fall of the first all-female wrestling show through the stories of those who lived it. The documentary premiered on MTV/LOGO, and was the basis of the original Netflix series, GLOW. In 2019, Connell chased another passion and launched Just Curious Media, which creates highly entertaining and immersive podcasts including Let’s Talk – Cobra Kai, a humorously nostalgic podcast covering all things in The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai universe. Due to good timing, and good luck, this show has become the #1 podcast covering Cobra Kai, the hit series on Netflix. Another fan favorite is That’s A Crime, a fascinating true crime podcast dissecting everything from a misdemeanor to a murder. And a new show in development is Dog Gone, a dog lovers podcast devoted to honoring the lives and memories of man’s best friend.
